Competency Based Education (CBE) programs have become more popular with today’s employers. Instead of “doing time” for the sake of completion, CBE programs teach adult learners the skills and knowledge they really need to be more successful in the workplace. These programs can also be more efficient as more focus is placed on helping learners demonstrate competence instead of requiring extra coursework and unnecessary degree or program requirements.
The ATD Competency Model provides a solid foundation for CBE programs. We have been thinking a lot about how to better prepare and develop our trainers and I think taking a look at the competencies chosen by ATD are helping to point us in the right direction. For example, when I think about “Change Management,” I considered how our team serves as agents of change within our organization. It’s really true –all changes filter through us! Our trainers are out there on the front lines delivering the messages of change through communications and classroom training. We need our trainers to demonstrate their competence to promote their ability to perform.
Focusing on demonstration of a set of competencies can really set your team or organization apart in terms of performance support. To read more about Competency Based Education, click here.
I look forward to seeing each of you on December 10 at James Arthur Vineyards!
