I am often asked whether or not there really is such a thing as a “balanced life”. The answer is “yes”! Keep in mind that everybody’s balance is a little different, but the essentials are the same.
Creating a balanced life is like creating a balanced meal. You have to have a little bit of a variety of different areas in your life to create balance. If you divide your life into different categories, you may come up with areas such as: family/relationships, work/school, finances, health/self-care, social/fun and spiritual/personal growth/education. When you have too much of one area (such as work) on your “plate”, there is limited space for other areas that you need. When you skip any area, just as with diet, you feel the difference and crave what you are missing.
When you realize what you are craving (such as fun), it’s time to put some of that area back into your life (or onto your plate). Look at the different areas of your life and notice which areas you “fill your plate” with and give yourself a smaller portion in that area. We may tend to look at things that we really enjoy as “dessert” so we deprive ourselves of the “treat” and force ourselves to take more of the “healthy” stuff.
We also need to look at our “plates” and see if there is anything that has “spoiled”. It may have “tasted good” in the past, but it’s been on the plate too long and has lost any flavor and nutrients. It’s time to dump it to create more room for other things that will fill you up and give you energy! Make a list of things that drain your energy at work and at home and decide whether or not you want to keep them on your plate, dump them, or delegate them to others.
Now look at your plate and notice which areas give you more energy and enhance your life. You want to take “extra helpings” of these! Once you dump some of the drains, you’ll have more room for the areas that give you back that balance and help you feel healthier and more content! Bon Appetit!
